WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE IN CLASSICS

Dear student,

You are close to graduation, and you have already started to explore which career paths are available to you. There are many career ideas. Read on to find out more about them.

 WHERE COULD I BE EMPLOYED?

If you are passionate about sharing knowledge about classical languages and culture with future generations, you could consider becoming a secondary school teacher. You must be aware that you do not have to wait for too long to find employment within the field of teaching in public schools. The Cyprus Ministry of Education conducts written exams every two years, and appointment of successful candidates is made with no delay. Of course there is also the option of teaching in private schools.

If you are interested in research, you can choose to study a Master’s or a PhD in Classics and find work in an academic environment. Our graduates are known for their employment in research centers and universities.

Teaching and research are not the only career paths available to you of course. As a graduate of a BA in Classics at the University of Cyprus you can be employed in a range of sectors:

  • Museums (as curator or education officer)
  • Libraries
  • Cultural institutions
  • Media and communication
  • Theatrical organisations
  • Administration at the public and private sectors (e.g. human resources / recruitment advisor; policy analyst / advisor)

During your studies in Classics you will have realised why Greek and Roman antiquity is seen as a foundational aspect of European culture and beyond. If you have a more adventurous mindset, your specialised knowledge of what remains the cornerstone for contemporary Europe is ideal for heading abroad to work in several European institutions and bodies, centers for European studies, diplomatic missions, and the United Nations. You should remember that your excellent Latin acquisition is an aid to your learning of other European languages that are particularly valuable for your career development. Moreover, interest in Classical Studies is growing rapidly in China. The current globalising character of Classics opens up new career paths to explore, if you are looking for the inspiration to challenge yourself to do something new and daring.

WHAT SKILLS HAVE I GAINED? WHAT FOR?

Remember that studying Classics provides you with many of the transferable skills employers keenly look for:

  • Advanced spoken and written presentation skills
  • Critical and rigorous thinking
  • Interpretation, analysis, and evaluation of evidence
  • Constructing arguments
  • Writing well-articulated texts to satisfy specific communicative goals
  • Reasoning and problem solving
  • Research and computing skills
  • Understanding of factors that shape societies
  • Interpersonal skills, such as being able to work creatively and collaboratively with others

This skill set is useful for a number of professional roles that are not directly associated with the study of Classical Antiquity. It allows you to open up multiple career doors and embrace your own path in a rapidly changing world. You just need to be excited about work and be confident in yourself. Here at the Department we enthusiastically support you no matter where your goals may take you. We are always glad to see you and hear about you.
